James Crawford started in the army as a lieutenant Robert Rutherford's company in the Vasterbotten regiment in 1616. He then transferred as a reformed lieutenant in the Lifeguard (Lifgardet) in 1646, He moved on to become a captain in the Osterbotten regiment, and finally served again in the Vasterbotten regiment. In 1646 he was listed as an "old man who has long been in service" and later served in Wismar in Pomerania. He died in Wismar in October 1655. He apparently had a farm in Gosback on the outskirts of Kalmar in Småland.
