James Crawford, was a son of Edward Crawford of Corbshill. He emigrated to Sweden from Scotland during Karl IX's reign (c.1608) with recruited Scottish troops where he served as an ensign in Patrick Rutherford's[SSNE 6633] regiment until 1613. He thereafter served in some of Uppland's great regiments. In 1621 he became a lieutenant in Peter de la Court's Dalar troop. The same year he became captain of a company of knights from Vasterbergslagen and southern Dalarna. In 1625 he was regimental quartermaster with the Vastmanland's regiment with whom he fought in Prussia in 1626. He died in Dirschau in July 1629. James probably married in Scotland, but his first wife died. His son by her, Goran [SSNE 2088], was also in Swedish service, serving in the cavalry until his death in 1661. James remarried one Elizabeth Crafoord, a relative of Alexander Crafoord, Patrick Rutherford's son-in-law. By his second marriage, there were several daughters.
