John Chamberlain served as Sergeant Major in Sir Jacob Astley's [SSNE 6913] regiment in the army of the James Marquis of Hamilton [SSNE 1348] which was destined for Swedish service in June 1630. He was permitted to recruit for his company in Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire, Hertford, Bedford and Southampton. This is possibly the Major Chamberlain who was part of the parley party at the siege of Magdenburg around Christmas 1631. After the losses suffered by the regiment, Chamberlain transferred as a reformed captain to George Fleetwood's regiment. He became a major again in 1633 and lieutenant colonel by 1637. In a letter dated 28 June 1639 from Hamburg, this officer signed a testmonial that arms bought by Sir Thomas Roe were serviceable and fit for service by Charles I. The fact that he is then absent from Swedish records suggests he then transferred to Stuart service with General James King, author of the testimonial
