David Campbell was born in Jämtland, the son of Ensign David Campbell and Catharina Grubbe. He was the grandson of the Scot, Major Carl Campbell who came to Sweden in 1609 [SSNE 2016]. David Campbell was baptised on 2 February 1673. In October 1697, Campbell volunteered into the Östgöta Infantry Regiment. He became an NCO on 10 September, and a Sergeant on 28 December, both 1699. It was not long before Campbell became an officer, and he was made a lieutenant by 1703. He also served as regimental quartermaster from January 1705. Campbell died, unmarried in Piotskow in Poland, apparently the day after his promotion.
