Major James Cavun till Canonhielm is often confused with the Colquhoun, Cahun and Gaun families. He joined the Swedish army in 1641 as a constable with the artillery. By 1657 he served as a sergeant, and in 1676 he became a captain of the artillery. In 1678 Cavun held the rank of major in the artillery at Marstrand. He was ennobled in 1689 as Canonhielm, and introduced to the Riddarhus in 1693 under nr 1202. He was married to Christina Morck and had one son and one daughter.
