Captain James Bannatyne was a Scottish officer in Swedish service. He was a captain in November 1627. That year he was mentioned in Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna's letter of authorisation for Lieutenant James Kincaird and John Sommerville, the latter pair being on their way to Scotland from Elbing in order to get recruits for the captain's company. He is probably the same as 'captain Ballantine' of Colonel Jacob Ramsay's regiment in 1631. Bannatyne later arrived in Moscow with recommendations to Tsar Michael from King Charles 1 and the Prince of Orange but was not accepted for Russian service on the pretext that the Tsar's title was incomplete in the Prince's letter. However, he went on to serve as Lieutenant Colonel of the Earl of Leven's Lifeguard of Horse in the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant in 1644
