There is a reformed ensign, named James Affleck, who is listed in the Swedish muster rolls for 1631, which would mean he had been previously employed in Alexander Hamilton's [SSNE 380] regiment, then in John Hamilton's [SSNE 2595] regiment. This is most likely the same as lieutenant colonel James Affleck who appears in Swedish service in 1635, possibly after having spent some time in Russia (see below). He was quartermaster in Alexander Gordon's [SSNE 2499] dragoon regiment, and appears to have achieved his highest rank as lieutenant colonel of a dragoon company until 1637. Confer [SSNE 2205] This in turn may be the same as the lieutenant James Affleck who appears in 1632 on Moscow musterroll as unassigned to any regiment, but probably fought at Smolensk. He was paid 12.5 roubles a month. Some of those who survived their Russian service subsequently returned to Swedish service.
