John (Hans) Kinnemond was born in Scotland in 1608. He came to Sweden in 1628 and became a merchant in Stockholm and a burgess either in 1638 or on 7 March 1646. Kinnemond had business relations with the Scots William Strang [SSNE 807] and Alexander Buchan [SSNE 815]. His primary profession was as a silk merchant, although we know that he also served as one of Stockholm's most important copper and iron exporters. The Momma-Reenstierna archives show Kinnemond as a regular trading partner with them between 1644-46. Their account book for 1650-1652 shows that he also engaged in the import of rye which was distributed through the same networks as his other exports without need for cash payments. When not trading himself, Kinnemond engaged in other professions. For instance, he acted as the co-owner and manager of the Norn iron works in Bergslagen between 1650-1654 for the Momma-Reenstierna family. His partners in the venture were Hans Neuman/Nyman (his brother-in-law) and Willem Momma while Kristoffer Neuman also advanced him cash for the project. Kinnimund was expected to provide Willem Momma with 3% commission on production and 8% interest on all advances. There were complications with these business relationships leading to a lawsuit against him by the Momma family. However, by 1654, the Norn works were firmly in Kinnemond's possession. Two volumes of correspondence survive dealing with his claims for compensation during 1650-54 period - although the affair dragged on until well after his death in March 1658. Other correspondence of his survives from September 1655 in relation to toll payments by him on some of his exports. Kinnemond was married to his brother's sister-in-law, Barbro Nyman.
