Johan Maul was born in Dieppe of a Scottish father, Johan Maile (son of Robert Maule of Craigie) who was a burgess and trader there. Johan jr became an ensign in Swedish service in 1654 and a lieutenant by 1656. Two years later he became a captain in Uppland regiment. In 1663 he was general quartermaster and a lieutenant in Pomerania and Wismar. He apparently left service in 1663, but returned as General Quartermaster and gained promotion to Lt. Colonel and temporary chief of his regiment in 1672-1675. Marryat noted him as the commander and rebuilder of Karlsberg fortress. He was ennobled in 1664 and introduced to the Riddarhus under nr. 682. In October 1686, James Thomson [SSNE 6332] wrote a letter from Norrkoping to Andrew Russell [SSNE 143] in Rotterdam noting that Maul was in town. He stated "NB There is ane John Meill a Scots man heir this weick wich is curious to hav 2 of our highland targes, ane sword they use of ther fashion, 2 bows and strings to them and 2 dorlochd [quivers] as they weir them full of arrows. Let me intreat you when you writ to RJ that you desair him to writ to his sone in law to buy them and send them be the first ship". Maul died sometime after 1689 and it is not known who he was married to.
