James Bennet was born in Scotland but left in the 1640s and entered Swedish service in 1650 serving as a lieutenant in Von Dohna's infantry from 1655. He became captain of the Queen's Lifeguards in 1657 where he served until 1660. Thereafter he became a member of the Infantry Liferegiment in Livland, based in Riga. Bennet was ennobled and naturalised in 1675, 7th of August and introduced into the Riddarhus the same year. He married Christina Kinnemond who was the daughter of Colonel Thomas Kinnimond (himself naturalised Kinnemond under nr.505) and Christina Scott. James died in 1693. His son William was born in 1680 and became a Major General in 1717 and a Baron in 1719.
