Text source

James Stuart (1566-1625) was the son of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley and Mary, Queen of Scots. He succeeded to the throne of Scotland in 1567. He later married in 1589 Anna of Denmark [SSNE 4731]. He was apparently made a Freemason at the Lodge of Scone and Perth, No.3 in 1601 by John Mylne at the king's own request, though Stevenson casts doubt on this. King of England and Ireland as James I 1603, he declared himself King of Great Britain, France and Ireland in 1604. James VI visited Norway in 1589 and Uraniborg in Denmark on 20/3/1590. He was accompanied, among others, by Chancellor Maitland [SSNE 1550] and the Earl Marischal of Scotland [SSNE 1535]. For his full biography see DNB.
