David Cunningham was, by 1578, the sub-dean of Glasgow and dean of the University Faculty there. He also served in the capacity of Parson of St Nicholas and eventually as Bishop of Aberdeen. He was selected by James VI to serve as an ambassador to Denmark-Norway and to various German princes in 1598 in order to explain James VI's right to the English throne.
