Thesis Title: Legal language and legal knowledge in Anglo-Saxon England
Supervisor: Professors Caroline Humfress and John Hudson

My thesis is on the language of the Anglo-Saxon laws, concentrating on questions of genre and the possible existence of a legal register in Old English. I am also interested in the ways in which language can be used as a way to discover the legal knowledge and methods of those who wrote laws. A particular research interest is the writings of Archbishop Wulfstan and in particular the linguistic differences between his laws and homilies, as well as his use of sources. My wider interests are Anglo-Saxon England, early medieval law and Old English linguistics.
