Searching for a Rusty Sink

Wednesday 07 December 2016

DGSD researchers, Craig Smeaton and William Austin, in collaboration with Christian Schroeder (University of Stirling, UK) have been awarded one of the first of the new SAGES small grants to investigate the novel concept of a rusty carbon sink in the coastal ocean.

The grant will bring together our research groups with the aim of applying the latest techniques, such as Mössbauer spectroscopy, to the study of marine sediment cores spanning the last millennia. It is hoped that this work will shed new light on the important linkages between iron and long-term organic carbon preservation in coastal sediments.
