DGSD PhD student chairs session at European Geosciences Union 2016 in Vienna

Thursday 21 April 2016

DGSD NERC-funded PhD student, Craig Smeaton, was co-convener of a full-day session of talks at the European Geosciences Union 2016 General Assembly in Vienna, Austria this week.

Craig, along with supervisor and DGSD HoD, William Austin, were leading a session on the Biogeochemistry of coastal seas and continental shelves, with a special focus on sedimentary carbon in the coastal ocean. Craig, who chaired the afternoon sessions, noted his great pleasure that this included the Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky Medal Lecture by Carlos M. Duarte, entitled Hidden Forests: The role of vegetated coastal habitats in the ocean carbon budget, with research overlap to our "Blue Carbon" research interests in DGSD.

The photographbelow shows Craig Smeaton at the follow-on Poster Session, presenting some of the recently funded work on "Blue Carbon" that has been funded by Scottish Natural Heritage (credit: W.Austin).
