MSc Student meets FCO Minister at Commonwealth Youth Forum

Thursday 10 December 2015

Postgraduate Sustainable Development student Stefan Rickford Knights received a CAPOD funding award to present at the Commonwealth Youth Forum in Malta, which was held between the 21st and 25th of November.

The Commonwealth Youth Forum is a platform for young people to debate development issues to be tackled by the Commonwealth and to contribute to development and democracy work in the Commonwealth, before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM, held on 27th to 29th of November). A document about the forum’s outcomes was prepared by the participants and served as a guide for project designs to be executed by National Youth Councils and Youth-Led Organisations in the Commonwealth. The projects will receive funding from the Commonwealth Secretariat. The outcomes document was presented to the Heads of Governments who attended the CHOGM.

Within this context, Stefan presented on the potential opportunities that are available to young people after the United Nations Conference on Climate Change which started on the 30th of November, 2015 in Paris. Over two hundred young leaders and professionals were present at the forum: “I was able to network and engage with young people with different expertise and diverse backgrounds”, Stefan said. In addition, Stefan also had the chance to meet Mr. Hugo Swire, UK Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and MP for East Devon, who is an alumnus of St Andrews University. Stefan noted that: “He was also particularly interested in the border dispute with my home country Guyana, and Venezuela; so we had a lot to talk about.

As a follow up to the Youth Forum in Malta, Stefan attends the Conference on Climate Change in Paris (COP21) which is held at the minute to get greater insight into potential opportunities that will be available to young people as a result of COP21.
