SGSD commends Scotland’s response to the global climate emergency

Wednesday 15 May 2019

Professor Bill Austin is currently working on a Blue Carbon secondment with Scottish Government.

Bill writes: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to attend the Scottish Parliament yesterday (15/05/19) to hear the Ministerial Statement on (and parliamentary discussion of) Scotland’s response to the global climate emergency. Scotland is now leading by example in its efforts to cut carbon emissions and I’m delighted that researchers at the University of St Andrews, working in partnership with the Scottish Blue Carbon Forum, are contributing to this debate and seeking-out novel nature-based solutions to help mitigate and adapt to the climate emergency.”

Recently, the UK Committee on Climate Change has suggested that the UK can end its contribution to climate warming within 30 years by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050; the Scottish Government has pledged to end Scotland’s contribution to climate change by 2045.
