DGSD partners in £1.5 million funding for SAGES+

Monday 13 July 2015

The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) have announced a new matched-funding package of up to £1,500,000 to support the continuation of the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES). SAGES+ will run for six years, from 2015 to 2020, to develop and support research networks that address emerging scientific and societal challenges and to help its researchers secure UK, EU and other international funding.

The Department of Geography & Sustainable Development (DGSD) will represent the University of St Andrews within the SAGES+ pool, together with the Universities of Aberdeen, Abertay, Dundee, Edinburgh, Stirling, Highlands & Islands, West of Scotland and Glasgow.

Commenting on the award, William Austin (DGSD and SAGES Graduate School Convenor), highlighted the SFC decision as “highly significant, signalling the internationally competitive arena in which SAGES+ partners were operating and the value of pooling to DGSD in its reputation and standing in the world”. Professor Austin added “I am delighted that DGSD will represent the University of St Andrews in this highly prized SFC pool; this is a fantastic opportunity for all our postgraduate research students, early-career research fellows and our academic staff”.
