DGSD PhD student wins this year’s HSA Valerie Karn memorial prize

Thursday 20 November 2014

Katherine Ellsworth-Krebs is the winner of this year’s Housing Studies Association Valerie Karn memorial prize for the best paper by an early career housing academic.

Katherine is supervised by Dr Louise Reid and Professor Colin Hunter and her research is on domestic energy and low-carbon living. Her winning paper Home-ing in on Domestic Energy Research: exploring the effect of ‘house’ and ‘home’ suggest that the ontological priority given to the ‘home’ results in scholarship which considers both social and physical aspects that shape demand. Conversely, research prioritising the ‘house’ is dominated by techno-economic thinking, and overlooks critical social considerations. The prize supports dissemination of the winning paper and feedback to the prize-winner. The HSA will also award Katherine with a £100 book token and meet the costs of attending the HSA annual conference in York.
