Richard Streeter in S.W. USA and Iceland

Tuesday 24 June 2014

Richard Streeter has recently returned from two international trips, one to Iceland and one to south-western USA.

From the 21st-24th May Richard attended a workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation titled “Social Change in the context of Climate Challenges” at the Santa Fe Institute, New Mexico, USA. Workshop attendees included geographers and archaeologists working in the Norse North Atlantic and the USA Southwest and the aim was to look at what we can learn from past societies who have responded to periods of climate change.

In June Richard was working in South Iceland with collaborators and students from the University of Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and Dundee as part of a project looking at the volcanic ash (tephra) from the eruption of Grímsvötn in 2011 and its relationship with vegetation cover.

The photograph below shows Richard surveying the site using the departmental dGPS system to provide location information on the botanical and geomorphological data collected.
