SGSD student cycling from Cairo to Cape Town

Friday 05 October 2018

SGSD undergraduate Alex McMaster together with Medical graduate Merlin Hetherington set out on an eight-month cycling expedition across 10,000 km from Cairo in Egypt to Cape Town in South Africa.

Departing from Cairo on World Sight Day (11 October 2018), Alex and Merlin will cycle on a tandem, to introduce and distribute the Arclight, a new revolutionary handheld solar-powered diagnostic tool known to help in the fight against preventable blindness and deafness. They will also provide training in using the device. The Arclight was developed by the University’s School of Medicine and is a low-cost, solar-powered ophthalmoscope-otoscope designed specifically as an easy-to-use tool for outreach or screening programmes in low-income countries.
