What will you miss most about your time as a student at St Andrews?

My time in St Andrews has been filled with incredible people. I’ll not only miss the amazing friends I’ve made but also the ability to chat to the variety of brilliant scientists and other academics in St Andrews.

What advice would you give to new students?

Explore St Andrews as much as you can. St Andrews has so many underexplored spaces outside of the town centre and so many fascinating people in the wider community that most students never meet. Take some time to venture outside your normal bubble and you’ll be amazed what you discover!

What are your plans after graduation?

I’m sticking around in St Andrews for another year as President of the Students’ Association. I’ll have to leave at some point but not just yet!

How do you think the Covid-19 pandemic and global events have shaped the Class of 2020?

Covid-19 meant that for many of us our last academic year ended quite abruptly and a lot of our “before we go” plans were cancelled. I think this will mean that we are all the more determined to keep in touch in the years ahead to organise reunions and other gatherings, and the chance to attend graduation ceremonies next year means we have the unique opportunity to have a one-year reunion with a lot of students which should be really great!

Have you taken any positives from the situation?

I’ve been amazed at how much students have stepped up to contribute to their communities throughout the pandemic. Wherever they are in the world, they have been helping neighbours, donating where they can and trying to maintain a sense of community among their fellow students.

Do you plan to come back to celebrate in person in St Andrews in 2021? If so, what are you most looking forward to about it?

Absolutely! I cannot wait to return to the Whey Pat Tavern for a pint and a good catch up with my friends!
