Movements and Motion: The Transnational Cinema of Polish Filmmakers Walerian Borowczyk, Jerzy Skolimowski and Andrzej Żuławski, and its Origins in the Avant-garde

I’ve a strong interest in post-WWII Polish cinema and avant-garde or ‘experimental’ film, as well as the theoretical ideas of Jean Epstein. This thesis is attempting to critically relocate three Polish emigre directors, revealing a continuum of ideas with pre-WWII Polish filmmakers, whilst also demonstrating extensive links with international avant-gardes (particularly British, French and Italian). The aim is to try and articulate, as fully as possible, the reasons why these filmmakers chose to work within other countries and cultural contexts, taking into account artistic, economic and historio-political circumstances.
