Mnemonic Communities: Memory of World War II on the Thai Screen and its Relationship to other Cultural Texts

My research explores the memory of the Second World War represented in several genres of filmic texts and other cultural texts, e.g. literary works, historical writings, and oral narratives. It draws attention to sites of memory engaged in the textual construction. Building up the network of film and these other cultural texts will reveal the politics of remembering and forgetting conducted by the mnemonic institutions: family, school, mass media, etc. The interplay and circulation of memory of World War II in Thai socio-cultural terrain will manifest mnemonic communities in Thailand, which qualitatively differ from the other countries in the South East Asia.
