St Andrews Film Studies at the Edinburgh International Film Festival

Dr Lucy Donaldson and Dr Leshu Torchin are contributing to this year’s EIFF programme with an illustrated talk on horror and the return of DocSalon.

In From Romero to Get Out, or: How Horror Helped Me Wake Up to the American Nightmare Lucy will deliver an illustrated talk that will contextualise their retrospective strand, The American Nightmare and explore horror’s power to reveal the problems of society, the costs of trying to be normal, and the real reasons we should be scared. The event takes place on Sunday 24 June at 13.20 in the FilmHouse, Lothian Road.

Leshu’s Doc Salon is returning with DocSalon2: But is it Documentary? This is a public discussion featuring documentary practitioners discussing the state of documentary with a focus on the questions that arise around fiction/non-fiction hybrids, animation, re-enactments, VR and other experimental techniques. This year’s panellists include:

Víctor Paz – Galician film journalist, programmer, and producer (Nocturno: Fantasmas de Mar en Puerto, screening at EIFF).

Julian Carrington – Distribution Manager at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and programmer.

Marie Lidén – filmmaker and animator based in Glasgow focusing her practice on documentaries and interactive documentary.

Xosé Ramón “Mon” Rivas – EIFF Documentary Programmer.
