Wu Tianming @ St Andrews, an IGCCC workshop

April 9 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

WU TIANMING @ ST ANDREWS
An IGCCC event
5 – 9 pm, Monday, 9 April 2018
School 1, The Quads, University of St Andrews
Everyone welcome!

Zhang Yimou paying tribute to WU TIANMING

Regarded as key mentor of the Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, Wu Tianming (1939-2014) was an influential master in his own right, known for acclaimed features such as LIFE (1982), THE RIVER WITHOUT BUOYS (1984), OLD WELL (1987) and KING OF MASKS (1996). He was also the youngest Head of Xi’an Film Studios and made important contributions as producer. Wu was extremely popular and well liked – so much so that his final film, THE SONG OF THE PHOENIX (2013-2016), was completed by his friends after his death and released in China posthumously. The workshop will be an opportunity to explore the life and work of the cinematic master, who remains little known in the West.

The film OLD WELL (1987), starring (director) Zhang Yimou, will be screened in full, followed by a refreshment break.

The workshop will also present recorded contributions from Prof. Chris Berry (King’s College, London), Wu’s contemporary veteran film director Xie Fei, and Prof. Wu Guangping (Beijing Film Academy). Live contributions from PhD students Huimin Deng, Jinuo Diao, Peize Li, and September Liu (University of St Andrews).

Please note that the Llibrary carries copies of other films of Wu, such as LIFE, THE PUPPETMASTER, RIVER WITHOUT BUOYS, and his final SONG OF THE PHOENIX is available on YouTube with English subtitles.
