Setsuko Hara @ St Andrews, an IGCCC event

February 5, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

IGCCC’s workshop SETSUKO HARA @ ST ANDREWS will take place at School 1 on Monday, 5 February 2018, 5- 9 pm.

This will be a commemoration of the amazing life and oeuvre of Japan’s most admired and universally adored actress, who left us in 2015.
We will open with a screening of one of Hara’s earliest films, the German-Japanese co-production THE NEW EARTH (a.k.a. The Daughter of the Samurai/Atarashiki Tsuchi/新しき土) 1937, directed by Arnold Frank and Mansaku Itami. Hara is only 17 years old when she appears in the film, alongside star Sessue Hayakawa.

The second part of the event will include contributions by historian Konrad Lawson and Film Studies scholar Philippa Lovatt (St Andrews), as well as commentary by Alistair Phillips (Warwick) on Tokyo Story, Bruce Chu (Communication University of China) on Hara’s films with Ozu, by Alex Zahlten (Harvard) and Joel Neville Anderson (Rochester/Japan Cuts), and Jennifer Coates on Hara’s image in gossip media (Kyoto U.).

Everybody welcome!
