“Sleeping Through Cinema”

Dr. Elena Gorfinkel (King’s College London)

Wednesday 27th February 2019

3:00 PM

Film Studies Boardroom (99 North Street)

What is reproduced in and through a body’s exhaustion? Considering the state of sleep as an incubator, this talk examines the domain of sleep as a field for the materialisation of alternate models of value: corporeal, sexual, and political. It examines cinematic ‘sleepworks’ such as Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel’s Somniloquies, Dane Komljen’s All the Cities of the North, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s hotel cinema project Sleepcinemahotel for their conjuring, out of sleep states some non-agentic creativities and erotic supplementarities. What sorts of queer energies are imagined, ferried, incubated in the oneirism of sleep space? Cinema’s tarrying with sleep may open up to the natality of collective dreams of a world beyond instrumentality, or a revolution of non-sovereignty.

Elena Gorfinkel is Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at King’s College London. She is the author of Lewd Looks: American Sexploitation Cinema in the 1960s (Minnesota, 2017) and co-editor of Global Cinema Networks (Rutgers, 2018) and Taking Place: Location and the Moving Image (Minnesota, 2011). Her essays on experimental, adult, underground and marginal cinemas, sexuality and embodiment, and women’s filmmaking appear in Discourse, Screen, Jump Cut, Camera Obscura, Cinema Journal/JCMS, World Picture, Framework, and several edited collections. She regularly writes criticism for Sight & Sound and Art Monthly. She is the recipient of a 2018 Creative Capital/ Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for her book project Aesthetic Strike: Cinemas of Exhaustion.
