CFS Speaker: Dr. Erika Balsom (King’s College London): “Moving Bodies: Capture and Control in Late Farocki”

February 21 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Dr. Erika Balsom

Moving Bodies: Capture and Control in Late Farocki

Presentation co-hosted by the Department of Film Studies and the School of Art History

At the time of his sudden death in 2014, Harun Farocki was at work on a project about the history of motion capture and the chronophotographic experiments of Étienne-Jules Marey and Eadweard Muybridge. Based on an examination of the corpus of footage Farocki assembled for the project and his correspondence about it with collaborator Matthias Rajmann, this presentation will speculatively chart the inchoate propositions of a final installation we will never see. While it remains impossible to reconstruct what the completed form of the installation might have been, this presentation will explore why Farocki was drawn to the subject of motion capture by contextualizing his research for this final project in relation to the filmmaker’s late works Serious Games (2010–12), Parallel I–IV (2012–14), and Labour in a Single Shot (2011–14).

**Dr. Balsom’s talk will be preceded by a screening and discussion of Harun Farocki’s Parallel I-IV (43 mins) in the Byre Studio Theatre, Feb. 21st, 11am**

Erika Balsom is Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at King’s College London. She is the author of After Uniqueness: A History of Film and Video Art in Circulation (Columbia University Press, 2017) and the co-editor of Documentary Across Disciplines (MIT Press, 2016).
