CFS Speaker Series: Professor Karen Boyle on Television and/as testimony in documentaries about the Jimmy Savile case

November 15 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Television and/as testimony in documentaries about the Jimmy Savile case

About the paper: Focusing on documentaries on the Jimmy Savile case this paper thinks through tensions in the representation of victim testimony. In doing so, this paper explores the stakes in naming Savile as a paedophile, and how this shifts attention away from the “macho culture” to focus instead on failures in safeguarding and questions about celebrity, sexual morality, and consent.

About the speaker: Karen Boyle is Professor of Feminist Media Studies at the University of Stirling. Her research is primarily concerned with questions of violence, gender and representation. She is author of Media & Violence: Gendering the Debates (Sage, 2005) and editor of Everyday Pornography (Routledge, 2010) and is currently working on a monograph provisionally entitled In/Visible Violence: Gender and Violence in Feminist Theory and Popular Culture.
