October 18 @ 5:15 pm - 7:00 pm

CFS Speaker Series: Professor James Chapman

The Film Finances Archive and the British Film Industry

About the paper: What can the archive tell us about the production histories of films like The African Queen, Dr No, and Tom Jones? What can we learn from the changing nature of film financing in the UK and how can it allow us to map the changing political and cultural economies of Britain? Drawing on research in the archives of Film Finances Ltd, a pioneer in the field of ‘guarantees of completion’ Prof Chapman explores will explore the nature of the Film Finances Archive and its value for understanding – and re-evaluating – the history of the postwar British film industry.

About the speaker: James Chapman is Professor of Film Studies at the University of Leicester and editor of the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television.
