REEL FILM SERIES 2017:

The 2017 Reel Film Society programme began in January with a live music screening of The Unknown, with original accompaniment by the Jane Gardner Trio.

This was followed by two successful workshops on programming and film festivals in February – with Alice Black (Head of Cinema, Dundee Contemporary Arts) and Sarah Smyth (forer Head of Marketing and Development at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, and festival director at the Dingle Film Festival).

RFS returns this spring with trio of films on the theme of ‘UNRULY WOMEN’.

This series celebrates the subversive force of women both behind and in front of the camera, by screening a selection of thrilling and moving films – all written and directed by women and centering on female characters within narratives of resistance. These films are particularly socially important by their mutual female empowerment off-screen and on-screen occurring in a climate of female under-representation at all levels of the film industry. Equally the films have a resounding political significance, given the various forms of backlash and opposition they were met with upon release.

6TH APRIL, 7PM, SCHOOL III

The series opens with the landmark queer neo-noir thriller BOUND (1996) by transwomen siblings The Wachowskis, featuring Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon as lesbian lovers who conspire to steal the Mafia’s money.

13TH APRIL, 7PM, SCHOOL III

A screening of the protested Indian-Canadian romance FIRE (1996) by Deepa Mehta will follow, which depicts the forbidden love of two women, portrayed by Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi, within the patriarchal and religious confines of Indian society.

Closing the series will be the coming-of-age drama THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL (2015) by Marielle Heller, which was controversially awarded an ‘18’ certificate for its ground-breaking depiction of Bel Powley as a teenage girl boldly exploring her sexuality in 1970s San Francisco.
