Film Screening: 'The Sun Island' and discussion with the director

Description
Thomas Elsaesser, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Media and Culture of the University of Amsterdam, presents 'The Sun Island', a found footage family film about love and passion, friendship and heartbreak and a documentary essay about coincidences, shattered lives and posthumous fame in Berlin between the wars. The film, which will be shown in English, is also about self-sufficiency and recycling, the green movement and the environment, before these notions had been properly invented, and which touches on the utopian potential of ideas that have lain buried in the ground of an island for the past 70 years. The film’s protagonist, Martin Elsaesser, was one of the most prominent modernist architects of Weimar Germany.

The film draws on a unique collection of home movies, photographs and letters, as well as contemporary interviews to document and dramatise a life-changing episode in the family histories of two all but forgotten German pioneer architects – one the designer of churches and markets, the other an inventor of urban gardening schemes – during the crucial years between the Weimar Republic and WWII.

From 2006 to 2012, Professor Thomas Elsaesser was Visiting Professor at Yale and since 2013 he is Visiting Professor at Columbia University. Author and editor of some 20 books, his work has been published in most European and several Asian languages. This film will be shown in English.
