Education and Experience

Chris holds a BA (Hons) in English from the University of Swansea and an Mlitt in Medieval English (Distinction in the dissertation) from the University of St Andrews. He also holds an MSc (Distinction) in Outdoor Education from the University of Edinburgh.

He is particularly interested in Old English and Old Norse language and literature. His thesis has the provisional title ‘Genealogy, Divine Sovereignty and universal Christian history in Anglo-Saxon Literature’, and will explore the use of genealogy in Old English literature to assert the political and religious authority of Anglo-Saxon kings, the influence of earlier historical writing on its development, and subsequent influence on Old Norse genealogical texts. His joint supervisors are Dr Chris Jones (English) and Dr Alex Woolf (History).

Before coming to St Andrews Chris worked in publishing and later as an outdoor education instructor.
