Undergraduate English language requirements

To enter the University of St Andrews as an undergraduate student you must meet our minimum English language requirements. Applicants from a majority English-speaking country or applicants who have been taught in an English-medium school will generally be able to demonstrate their ability with a satisfactory level of achievement in the English component of their school-leaving qualifications.

Applicants who use English as an additional language, and who cannot evidence their English language ability through their school-leaving qualifications, should use the language qualifications listed below as evidence of their English language proficiency.

English language requirements by faculty

The tables below show the English language tests accepted by the University, and the minimum scores required by each Faculty. If your scores for Writing or Speaking are below IELTS 6.5 or equivalents listed for other tests, it is likely that you will be asked to attend the University's Academic English & Study Skills Pre-Sessional Programme (AESSP).

Other qualifications accepted as English language evidence for undergraduates

International Schools

If you have been recently educated in an English-medium school, you may be able to demonstrate your English language proficiency with a satisfactory level of achievement in the English component of your school-leaving qualification. The qualifications listed below can normally be used as evidence of your English language proficiency. The level of achievement required to evidence your English language competence may differ from the level required as an academic entry requirement. All grades are minimum requirements:

We accept a number of other qualifications as evidence of your English language proficiency. These are in addition to any academic entry requirements and the required grades may be different from the grades required for entry to a specific subject.

When do I provide my English language evidence?

If you have already achieved the required English language level before you apply, please include the evidence with your application form.

Evidence of your English language ability can also be submitted after you have applied, so please do not wait for your results before you apply to the University.

If you do not have evidence that you have met our English language requirement before you apply, this will form part of any conditional offer we make you. We may recommend or require you to attend one of our pre-sessional courses, which provide English language and academic orientation, designed to prepare you for study.
