Postgraduate English language requirements

You can use any of the following options to demonstrate your English language proficiency:

Bachelor's degrees taught through the medium of English from countries which are not listed as Tier 4 exceptions will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Students who cannot provide any of the evidence above will need to submit a valid English language test from this list:

    • IELTS (Academic)
    • IELTS (Academic) for UKVI purposes
    • PTE Academic
    • CPE
    • CAE
    • TOEFL iBT (internet-based test)
    • Trinity ISE II

If you are made an offer for postgraduate study that is conditional on attending a pre-sessional course, and you need a Tier 4 visa, the English language evidence you must provide is IELTS (Academic) for UKVI. The pre-sessional requirements are on the pre-degree page.

When do I provide my English language evidence?

If you have already achieved the required English language level before you apply, please include the evidence with your application form.

Evidence of your English language ability can also be submitted after you have applied, so do not wait for your test results before you apply to the University.

If you have not yet achieved the minimum language requirement before you apply, this will form part of any conditional offer we make you. We may recommend or require you to attend one of our pre-sessional courses or you may be able to study on a Pre-Masters programme before you start your postgraduate degree.
