Undergraduate Admissions

Welcome. St Andrews is a University of the highest reputation to which people come from all over the British isles and from across the world. The School of Divinity (known also as St Mary's College) reflects this diversity in both its students and staff yet it is also very much a community in which people know one another.

St Mary's is in the heart of the town and within its historic buildings houses a library, lecture and seminar rooms, social facilities and offices.

The College is rooted in the teaching of biblical and theological studies. Our degree programmes vary, ranging from those traditional in style to others that are highly inter-disciplinary; the module structure of a St Andrews degree allows you considerable choice. In Scotland, a four-year first degree at undergraduate level leads normally to the award of a 'Masters' degree qualification. (In the Scottish tradition, many undergraduate degrees are called 'Masters.' In Divinity there is an option for an MTheol or single joint honours MA.)

The School of Divinity offers a unique learning experience. We place great emphasis on individual attention through small-group tutorials (of normally up to 12 people) as well as lectures (for the whole class). In the first two years some classes can comprise up to 80 or more students but at honours level can be 20 or often less. (The Scottish tradition of four-year degrees permits students to take one or two modules outside their specialist subject area - hence the larger classes in years one and two.) To help you develop analytical, communication and presentational skills we provide study-skills classes too. Our graduates leave us very well prepared for future employment. They go on to careers in public service, commerce and the Church.

You can spend four enjoyable and challenging years with us or take up to one year of your degree in the United States, Canada or Europe. North American students who join us for one semester as part of their own programme of study find the experience immensely rewarding and we gain immensely from their presence amongst us in classes and the wider life of St Mary's College.

Classroom with studentsIf you would like to visit us before you complete your UCAS application we would be delighted to meet you. A number of visiting days are organised throughout the year but if you are unable to come on one of those we will do our best to offer an alternative if you contact us in advance.
