Residential, Full-Time Study

The School of Divinity offers taught MLitt (and PGDip) programmes in five subject areas:

  • Analytic and Exegetical Theology (see its website)
  • Bible and the Contemporary World (see here and the website of the distance-learning version of this MLitt)
  • Biblical Languages and Literature (see its website)
  • Systematic and Historical Theology (see its website
  • Theology, Imagination and the Arts (ITIA) (see its website)

These all commence in the autumn of each academic year and conclude with the submission of a 15,000 word dissertation by mid-late August the following year.

FountainWeekly classes are held featuring both lectures and discussions; regular attendance is expected.

For many students the MLitt is a preparation for doctoral studies, but applications are also welcome from those seeking this degree not as a stepping stone, but as a significant contribution to their own personal and professional development.

Twelve Reasons to take a Residential MLitt

  1. World-class faculty offering research-led teaching
  2. A careful blend of taught modules and individual research in both semesters
  3. Small classes and seminars in which student participation is a given
  4. A choice of five weekly research seminars with guest speakers from the UK, Europe and the USA
  5. A unique emphasis on the integration of biblical and theological perspectives
  6. A vibrant postgrad community which studies and fellowships together
  7. Dedicated study space for MLitt students
  8. A three-month dissertation in accord with the student's own research interest
  9. Career training for both academic progression and professional life
  10. A needed bridge to a research-driven PhD program, with higher acceptance rates
  11. Excellent libraries, including Divinity's own King James' Library, founded in 1612
  12. The coastal university town of St Andrews and the charm of Fife, with Edinburgh close by
