St Andrews top for student academic experience

According to the National Student Survey 2019 the University of St Andrews is best in the UK for student academic experience for the eleventh time in the past 13 years. Read more.

Graduating against all odds

Twenty-two year old Tashi Tahir – who fled Pakistan in 2004 because of religious persecution and overcame the challenges of seeking asylum in the UK – graduated from the University with an MA in Management on Friday 28 June. Read more.

Biomedical Sciences (BMS) building

Biomedical Sciences: business as usual

In February this year, a fire badly damaged two labs in the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) building on the North Haugh. Since then, the University has been working with Portakabin to develop purpose-built modular buildings that will enable staff and students to continue their world-leading research. Read more.

Arnold Palmer Invitational, 9 September 2019

Take part in this friendly competition to win the coveted Arnold Palmer Invitational Claret Jug Trophy!  Golfers will spend the day teeing off on the Castle Course with all refreshments and an exclusive Saints Golf gift bag included. PLASTIC: Unwrapped

Thanks to an R&A travel scholarship, Milly Clover and Sophie Dorothe Lieke – two biology students who graduated this June – are travelling through six continents within nine months to seek solutions to plastic pollution. This project is particularly apposite given recent shocking research, and will showcase how individuals and initiatives around the globe are using plastic responsibly as a resource, rather than ignoring the problem.

Boat Club makes history!

The Boat Club’s Senior Men’s Coxed Four made club history recently at Henley Royal Regatta while at Henley’s Women’s Regatta our Women’s Aspirational Academic Coxless Four reached the quarter-finals. New research carried out at St Andrews has discovered that grey seals can copy human speech and songs using the same sound production mechanisms as humans. Read more.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sally Mapstone recently introduced a special performance of Curious Shoes – a play for people living with dementia – at the Byre Theatre. Read more.

Scottish Varsity Matches 2019

The ancient rivalry between Scotland’s two oldest university rugby clubs returns to BT Murrayfield on Saturday 21 September. Join thousands of fans to watch the University of Edinburgh and University of St Andrews’ rugby teams clash on the international pitch! General Council News

2019 General Council Business Committee Election results
Many thanks to all those who stood and who voted in the recent Business Committee election to fill seven vacancies on the Business Committee from 1 July 2019. Congratulations to the successful candidates: Dr Stephanie O’Rourke, Mr Alan Chalmers, Mrs Grace Lyon, Mrs Annabel Hamid, Mr Gregory Newman, Ms Eliane Sum and Mr Stuart Bryan. The full results can be accessed via the General Council election page.

The next meeting of the General Council is scheduled to take place on Saturday 30 November 2019 in Parliament Hall at 10.30am. Members will be notified closer to the time. Email: generalcouncil@st-andrews.ac.uk

Austria

All alumni are invited to a beach event at Badeschiff Wien, Donaukanal, 1010 Vienna on Friday 30 August, from 5pm. Come and enjoy a couple of drinks and a beautiful sunset on the Donaukanal!

Berlin

Alumni in Berlin (and alumni visiting Berlin) are invited to the Summer BBQ on 27 July from 2pm. We are meeting in Mitte and from there will head to the city outskirts. Tickets cost €10 and are only available via standrews.berlin. If you are interested in attending, please register at Saint Connect.
Members are also invited to an information event about Babbel (the language learning app) at Lesson Nine GmbH, Max-Beer-Straße 2, 10119 Berlin, on Thursday 26 September from 6.30pm Tickets are free. If you are interested in attending, please register at Saint Connect.

North West Alumni Association (Manchester)

We are looking for engaged and enthusiastic alumni based across the north west to contribute to our growth. We are based in Manchester, so if you’re within travelling distance and are interested in helping us develop into an active support network for alumni of all ages, please contact us northweststandrewsalumni@hotmail.com.

San Francisco

Join alumni from St Andrews and other UK universities on the third Tuesday of each month at the bar on the fourth floor of the University Club (800 Powell). The next event is on Tuesday 20 August at 7pm. Preferred dress code is business casual.

South Africa

The next meeting for Cape Town alumni will take place at 33 Tritonia Road, Table View, Cape Town on 25 August at 12.30pm. New faces are always welcome!

Sydney

The next meeting of the University of St Andrews Alumni Club, Sydney will take place at Taylor’s Rooftop (at The Republic Hotel) (69-73 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000) on Saturday 27 July between 3pm and 6pm.

Western Australia

The club is planning another catch-up this year around St Andrew's Day. The group is considering joining up with other like-minded souls from the Auld Country and taking several tables at the St Andrews Society of WA, St Andrew's Day Ceilidh on Friday 29 November 2019 in Perth. Hungary

The University of St Andrews Alumni Club, Hungary is hoping to reconnect St Andrews Alumni through socials and networking events in the Budapest area, while also serving as a link to the University. The University of St Andrews Alumni Club, Madrid has just been launched and is planning to hold its first event in September. Calling all alumni based in North Germany (Hamburg/Bremen/Oldenburg/Hannover). Mr Salvatore Coppola would like to start a club in this area and is hoping to hold the first event in August. If you are interested, then please complete the doodle poll to confirm which date suits you best.

School of Psychology
Golden Anniversary Celebrations: 23−25 August 2019

We hope that Psychology alumni and former members of staff will help us mark this milestone anniversary by joining us for a special reunion weekend, the highlight of which will be a celebratory dinner/ceilidh on Saturday 24 August. Tickets can be purchased online at a cost of £45 per person, including wine. Accommodation is also available to book online with a special alumni discount.
