Launch of the US Chancellor’s Circle

We recently celebrated the launch of the Chancellor’s Circle in the United States with receptions in New York City and Washington, DC. On both occasions, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sally Mapstone welcomed the Chancellor, The Rt Hon Lord Campbell of Pittenweem CH CBE PC QC, along with alumni, parents and friends of the University. The Chancellor described his parliamentary career and gave a unique insight into current issues facing the United Kingdom. Read more about the Chancellor’s Circle.

New Director of St Andrews museums

Dr Catherine Eagleton from the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in the US has been appointed as the new Director of Museums at the University of St Andrews. Read more.

University launches Jo Corrie online resource

A St Andrews PhD student has developed a website to celebrate the life and work of Jo Corrie – the socialist miner and writer of plays, poems and fiction. His most famous work - In Time o’ Strife − was revived by the National Theatre of Scotland in 2013. Read more.

Prestigious research grants awarded to St Andrews

Academics from the University of St Andrews have been awarded substantial research grants from the Leverhulme Trust and British Academy. Read more.

Woman’s Water Polo team

Champions!

The Woman’s Water Polo team recently became the first St Andrews women’s team to win a Championship Medal from the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Big Wednesday National Finals. Read more.

We are excited to announce the launch of two new projects: members of the first Women’s Futsal team at the University are fundraising to purchase their own uniforms, while the Boat Club’s Project24 is raising funds to purchase two new boats. We are also delighted to confirm that Rachel Nixon, has successfully reached her target of £1,500 which will enable her to travel to Zambia and help teach English and sport to the school children. We wish her all the best for the summer.

We are adding exciting new projects all the time! We would love to hear from students, alumni and staff alike about fundraising initiatives that could benefit the University community, so please contact us at SaintsFunder@st-andrews.ac.uk. If you’ve already been in touch, we’ll get back to you to carry on the discussion. If you’re interested in supporting projects that are closed, you can do so through our online donation form highlighting the project of your choosing.

St Andrews Summer Sports Camps

Saints Sport is hosting camps in Summer 2019 for Hockey (Ages 13-17), Rugby (Ages 8-16), Tennis (13-17) and Ultimate Frisbee (Ages 13-21).

The five-day camps give an insight into all aspects of performance sport at university and incorporate individual specialist skills coaching, technical drills focusing on team play and general fitness and conditioning sessions.

Green Gown Awards 2019

The Green Gown Awards UK and Ireland recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK and Ireland.

The Enterprise category, sponsored by Colleges and Universities Business Officers (CUBO) is looking for initiatives from existing students or alumni (up to a maximum of three years from leaving the institution). This category recognises social responsibility, social media and sustainable enterprise as key ingredients of contemporary education to ensure a supply of education leavers who can rise to the 21st century's economic, environmental and social challenges.

If you have established a sustainability initiative/enterprise, the Awards are keen to hear from you.

New “Go Saints” Facebook page

Saints Sport has launched a new Facebook page called "Go Saints" for students, parents and alumni to keep track of the latest photos, fixtures and results from Saints Sport teams. This will be the primary location for all the latest news on Saints Sport. Keep in touch by liking the new Facebook page.

The Proctor awarding the John Honey Award 2018 to Sarah Rodway-Swanson

The John Honey Award

John Honey Award is given to one student every year who makes an outstanding and exceptional contribution to student wellbeing during their time at St Andrews. It is given in memory of John Honey, a student who bravely rescued five seamen from their wrecked ship off the coast of St Andrews in 1800.

Nominations have now closed and we will announce the 2019 in the May edition of St Andrews in the news. Pictured above is Sarah Rodway-Swanson receiving the John Honey Award 2018 from the Proctor.

Arnold Palmer Invitational, 9 September 2019

Take part in this friendly competition to win the coveted Arnold Palmer Invitational Claret Jug Trophy!  Golfers will spend the day teeing off on the Castle Course with all refreshments and an exclusive Saints Golf gift bag included. The University of St Andrews Careers Centre is hosting its first ever Vancouver Industry Insights Meet Up this summer. Please mark your calendars for the evening of Tuesday, 23 July for a night of careers conversations and time to celebrate the Vancouver St Andrews community. This event will take place at the Red Truck Beer Company, 295 E 1st Ave, Vancouver, BC, and will be open to all St Andrews alumni, current students, and their families. Further details to follow.

Join with us in celebrating 50 years of Psychology at the University of St Andrews. More details will follow about events taking place between 23 – 25 August 2019.

Notice of Business Committee Elections: May/June 2019

Elections to fill seven vacancies on the General Council's Business Committee will take place in late May. The closing date for nominations is 12 noon on Friday 17 May 2019. Candidates must be members of the General Council and be proposed and seconded by a General Council member.

Provided there are more candidates than vacancies, elections will be by online voting, using the single transferable vote system, between Monday 27 May and Friday 21 June 2019.

Information on the procedures for the online voting system will be sent to members in May 2019 and will be available on the election page of the General Council website.

The result of the elections will be announced at the next meeting of the General Council on Saturday 29 June 2019 at 10.30am in Parliament Hall, St Andrews, with tea and coffee available from 10am.

Huda Ismail founded the Institute of International Peace Building to develop the means to reform former terrorists and reintegrate them back into mainstream Indonesian society through research, arts and civil society initiatives. St Andrews Baroque Ensemble

St Salvator’s Chapel, Thursday 2 May, 7.30pm
Claire Luxford directs the Baroque Ensemble in a performance of music for The Tempest by Matthew Locke, ‘Composer in Ordinary’ to Charles II, interspersed with readings from the play. The concert will also feature music by his friend and successor Henry Purcell.

A Night at the Opera

St Salvator’s Chapel, Saturday 4 May, 6pm
Alumni Laurie Slavin (tenor) and Caroline Taylor (soprano) return to their alma mater for an early evening concert at St Salvator’s Chapel, with duets from Puccini’s La Bohème, Bernstein’s West Side Story and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado. The performance is free, but donations are welcome to further their opera studies.
