MUSA extension to enhance exhibitions

A major redevelopment and extension of the Museum of the University of St Andrews (MUSA) will enable important artworks and collections to go on display in the town. Substantial funding has already been pledged by significant individuals and trusts, and we are now just £250,000 short of our £1.7m target. StAnza 2018!

StAnza – one of the top poetry festivals in the UK – is taking place in St Andrews between Wednesday 7 and Sunday 11 March this year, with more than 80 readings, performances, discussions, poetry-inspired installations and exhibitions and workshops to choose from. Headline poets include Liz Lochhead, Sinéad Morrissey and Don Paterson and this year’s themes are The Self and Borderlines. Find out more.

Steve Reicher (Professor of Social Psychology) was in Istanbul recently observing the trial of an academic colleague accused of terrorist propaganda by the Turkish Government. Read his first hand account.

Research teams at St Andrews and the Complutense University of Madrid have discovered that killer whales have the capability to learn new sounds. Read more.

The spring telephone campaign: it’s good to talk

Our spring telethon is currently underway, and in the first ten days of a five-week campaign, we have already raised £60K! Ella Walsh is a Development intern and a previous telephone campaign student caller. Read more about what she has learned from the many alumni she has talked to over the past couple of years, and why she is proud to be part of this key fundraising initiative. If you receive a phone call from a student, it would be wonderful if you could spare a few minutes to talk to them, share your experiences and support St Andrews and its students.

Rugby Club 160th Anniversary Dinner

The University Rugby Club warmly invites students, alumni, supporters, friends and family to attend the 160th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday 2 June at the Fairmont Hotel, St Andrews. The evening will be hosted in partnership with the Bill McLaren Foundation, which aims to improve lives through rugby and inspire youngsters to achieve their personal best. We are delighted to bring you an evening of entertainment with former All Black captain and rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick, and with ex-Scotland captain Rory Lawson overseeing events as master of ceremonies. The University’s Work Shadow Programme returns for summer 2018. The winter programme provided over 230 vital opportunities for our students to find out what their chosen career could actually be like. If you are willing and able to host a current student at your place of work over the summer holidays for a day (or longer) then please register your interest now.

Fourth Arnold Palmer Invitational Golf Tournament

The University of St Andrews Arnold Palmer Invitational golf tournament is returning to the St Andrews links this year. A round of golf on the stunning Castle Course and some friendly competition will be followed by dinner and prize-giving. Alumni, parents, students and friends of the University are all invited to join us for the event on Saturday 30 June 2018 at the end of Graduation Week. All proceeds from the event will support the Arnold Palmer Scholarship and the Saints Golf Programme. Further information and register.

Alumni Festival Weekend 2018

Want to walk along the pier once again? Join the traditional Sunday Pier Walk. Sentimental about the sports hall? Take a tour of the redeveloped Sports Centre to see what it looks like now. Miss making dramatic entrances with Mermaids? Come and see one of the many student shows. Or join us in Lower College Hall for the annual alumni dinner.

Professor Sellers published in Japanese

Our Japanese alumni will be interested to know that Professor Susan Sellers from the School of English has recently had her novel Vanessa and Virginia published in Japanese. The novel is about the intense relationship between sisters Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.

Mountaineering Club reunion

Calling all mountaineering alumni! The St Andrews University Mountaineering Club is holding a reunion on Saturday 27 October 2018 at the Atholl Arms Hotel, Blair Atholl, with 35 past presidents attending. There will be an illustrated talk about the pioneering mountaineering expeditions to Greenland by St AUMC in the 1970s. Email for more details of the event and to reserve a place.

The Return
