Marseille Middleton Holloway Collection

This fascinating collection of historical documents, recently entrusted to the University, contains a wide range of material from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries and offers an important new resource for scholars of politics and literature. Launch of The Kernel

The Kernel is a new space for practical projects and workshops for local community groups, based within the grounds of the St Andrews Botanic Garden. It was recently opened by local MP Stephen Gethins. Read more.

Green data centre wins gold

A green-energy data centre at the University of St Andrews has achieved the highest level of award for the third time under the Certified Energy Efficient Datacenter Award (CEEDA) scheme. Read more.


School of English staff in Saltire shortlists

In this year’s Saltire Society literary awards Professor John Burnside has been shortlisted for poetry book of the year and fiction book of the year, while Dr Peter Mackay has been shortlisted for the research book of the year. Read more.


British Council: Studying in the UK

In 2016 Veda Tirumalareddy (MLitt 2010) was named as a Finalist in the British Council Study UK Alumni Awards for the field of entrepreneurship in India. The British Council decided to make a video about her. She also tells her fascinating story on our blog.

St Andrews scientists in the news

Scientists from the School of Biology and the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) are currently in the news. Professor Frank Gunn-Moore – Director of Research at the School of Biology and a leading dementia research expert – has been invited to give the annual Christmas Lecture for Alzheimer’s Scotland at The Hub in Edinburgh on Thursday 14 December. Meanwhile, the CREEM team is participating in a desperate attempt to save the last few vaquita in the world, and has been involved in estimating their numbers. Read more.

Friends reunited

During the first weekend in November, we were delighted to welcome two groups of alumni back to St Andrews: one to celebrate 50 years since they matriculated and the other 50 years since they graduated. Read more.

Funding available for remote access to sensitive data

The University has been granted £1.5 million from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to create and manage a new Micro Safe Settings Network (MSSN) to support, strengthen and widen remote access to sensitive data held by data centres across the UK. Read more.

Inscribe a flagstone for December graduation

Perhaps you have a son, daughter, relative or friend graduating this December? Or you might want to remember a loved one or just mark your time in St Andrews? If you make a gift this month to inscribe one of our lovely St Salvator’s Quadrangle flagstones it will be ready in time for June graduation, and you will also be supporting St Andrews students through our 600th Anniversary Scholarship Fund. The University of St Andrews Alumni Club, Cambridge are holding their 20th annual dinner on Friday 17 November from 7.00pm at St John’s College, Cambridge. This year’s guest of honour will be Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Mapstone. Celebrate St Andrew's Day in London with alumni from other Scottish universities! The University of St Andrews Alumni Club, London is holding a St Andrew's Day Ceilidh on Friday 1 December between 7.30pm and 11.00pm at The Ceilidh Club, Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Road, London, NW1 7AY. A great band and good fun are guaranteed! Tickets via Eventbrite.

Alumni Carol Service and reception – St Andrews
Join us for this year’s Alumni Carol Service on Monday 11 December at 7.00pm in St Salvator’s Chapel, North Street. The Service will be led by Rev Dr Donald MacEwan and the St Andrews Renaissance Singers will lead the traditional carols.

The Carol Service is free to attend. Tickets (priced £7.50) for optional Mulled Wine and Mince Pie Reception in Lower College Hall which will follow the Service are available to purchase online.

University of St Andrews Rugby Club 160th Anniversary

The University Rugby Club's 160th Anniversary Celebrations will take place over the weekend of 1 – 3 June 2018. Alumni, parents, friends and supporters of Saints Rugby are invited back to St Andrews for a weekend featuring a golf tournament at the Kittocks Course on Friday afternoon, exhibition matches on University Park on Saturday afternoon and finishing with a celebratory dinner at the Fairmont Hotel, St Andrews. Tickets will be on sale very soon, but if you would like to be added to the 160th mailing list, or for more information, please contact the club.

General Council News

Winter meeting of the General Council of the University of St Andrews
The winter meeting of the General Council will take place on Saturday 25 November at 10.30am in Parliament Hall, South Street, St Andrews. Tea and coffee will be available from 10.00am.

Professor Sally Mapstone, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, will preside and deliver the University Address. Steve Watt, the University’s Chief Information Officer, will present on Responding to cyber attacks? The threats facing the University and what’s being done about them. General Council members will be sent a link to the billet (meeting paper) in advance of the meeting. Further information about the meeting.
