Sports legends visit St Andrews

Rugby legends Sean Fitzpatrick and Francois Pienaar, and World Cup winning footballer Lilian Thuram recently attended an event hosted by Principal Professor Sally Mapstone and staged by the Sport at the Service of Humanity Foundation and the International Sports Promotion Society Handa. Dr Handa’s support for postgraduate students at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence is led by Dr Tim Wilson. Read more.

Research could revolutionise future of electronic devices

The findings of research led by the Universities of St Andrews and Tokyo could result in the development of new, much more powerful computer chips than those in today’s computers and smart phones. Read more.


Chancellor’s Circle

The Chancellor’s Circle was established to recognise the commitment of all the benefactors who have remembered St Andrews in their estate planning. Members of the Chancellor’s Circle joined Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Mapstone, the Chancellor, Lord Campbell and other invited guests at Lower College Hall recently to hear about the extension to the Museum of the University of St Andrews. Domestic violence influences partner preferences

According to research by scientists from the University’s School of Psychology and Neuroscience Perception Lab, women who are afraid of violence within partnerships prefer more feminine men. Read more.

Launch of the University of St Andrews German Association

The Principal, Professor Sally Mapstone, recently launched the new University of St Andrews German Association, with events in Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin. St Andrews is the first Scottish university to launch such an Association. It was founded to raise funds to establish new Germany Scholarships for St Andrews, foster cultural and academic exchange between St Andrews and Germany and promote networking and careers opportunities for alumni in Germany. Since the launch, we have had a huge response from alumni all over Germany! Find out more about how to get involved.


Cyber Nexus

Professor Kevin Hammond of the School of Computer Science at St Andrews is leading Cyber Nexus – a new cybersecurity and cyber resilience project recently launched by the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SISCA). Read more.


Navy ‘ramp-up’ has limited impact

Scientists from the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) at St Andrews have found that Naval efforts to protect whales by increasing the noise levels of sonar have limited benefit. Read more.

New research from our School of Management has revealed that if you live in an area in Scotland with union-themed street names, you are less likely to identify as Scottish only. Read more.

Successful autumn telephone campaign

Our two week autumn telephone campaign has come to an end and we are delighted to confirm that around £100,000 has been raised in gifts and pledges. We want to thank all alumni and parents from the UK, US and Canada who kindly participated in the campaign and helped to support a variety of priority University projects. The students really enjoyed talking to you! If you have yet to make your pledged gift and are from the UK or Canada, you can do so online. If you are from the US you can make your gift using our online form.

Inscribe a flagstone for graduation

Perhaps you have a son, daughter, relative or friend graduating this December? Or you might want to remember a loved one or just mark your time in St Andrews? If you make a gift this month to inscribe one of our lovely St Salvator’s Quadrangle flagstones it will be ready in time for June graduation, and you will also be supporting St Andrews students through our 600th Anniversary Scholarship Fund. The University of St Andrews Alumni Club, Switzerland is organising a visit to the Zurich Christmas Market at Sechseläutenplatz/Bellevue on Thursday 7 December from 7.30pm to celebrate the first birthday of the Club. Alumni Carol Service - St Andrews

Join us for this year’s Alumni Carol Service on Monday 11 December at 7.00pm in St Salvator’s Chapel, North Street. The Service will be led by Rev Dr Donald MacEwan and the St Andrews Renaissance Singers will lead the traditional carols.

The Carol Service is free to attend. Tickets (priced £7.50) for optional Mulled Wine and Mince Pie Reception in Lower College Hall which will follow the Service are available to purchase online.
