St Andrews top for teaching quality

The University of St Andrews was recently named UK University of the Year for Teaching Quality in The Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2017. The Guide also ranked St Andrews third in the United Kingdom as well as runner-up for the title of UK University of the Year. Read more

Honorary graduates achieve Nobel success

Congratulations to Bob Dylan on being awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. Dr Dylan received an honorary degree from the University of St Andrews – only the second he has ever accepted – on 24 June 2004.

We also send our congratulations to Nobel Prize in Chemistry recipient Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart who received his honorary degree from St Andrews in 2010.

Understanding human impact on marine mammals

A major new study published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine has investigated the potential cumulative effect of human activities on marine mammals. The committee of experts responsible for the study was chaired by Peter L Tyack, Professor of Marine Biology at St Andrews. Read more

Varsity victory!

The Men's First XV made it four victories in a row in the RBS Scottish Varsity Rugby Match at BT Murrayfield securing a 24-12 win over a strong Edinburgh team. Man of the Match was 4th year student Scott Docherty. See the full match stream (courtesy of Scottish Rugby).

Meanwhile, the Women's First XV made a valiant effort against an Edinburgh team containing a number of Scottish internationals. See the full match stream.

Green Guardbridge

The £25 million biomass energy centre being built on the site of the former paper mill at Guardbridge has been shortlisted for the prestigious Scottish Green Awards 2016. Read more.

University plans affordable accommodation

The University plans to build new, affordable housing for its staff and postgraduate students on the eastern edge of St Andrews. A Pre-Application Notice has been submitted to Fife Council for a 64-home development on the five-acre site known as The Grange. Read more.

Revolutionary RadarCat technology

RadarCat (Radar Categorisation for Input and Interaction) is a revolutionary piece of technology created by researchers at the University of St Andrews which can detect what an object is by placing it on a small radar sensor. Read more.

Launch of The Scores

The School of English is proud to announce the launch of The Scores, a new online journal of poetry. The Scores is run by postgraduate writers under the direction of an advisory board that includes Don Paterson, Robert Crawford, Kathleen Jamie, Peter Mackay, Emma Jones and Oli Hazard.

The journal is currently open for submissions and can be read here.

Dr Derek Browning appointed Moderator of Church of Scotland

Careers Centre Winter Work Shadowing Programme

The Careers Centre is looking for support from alumni and friends to provide work shadowing opportunities for our students this winter. Last year saw 174 hosts registering and more than doubled the number of students involved in the Programme. If you or your company can provide an opportunity for our students, please register online.

A new group has been established on Facebook for alumni in Poland. The University of St Andrews Alumni Club, Warsaw welcomes anyone in the region to join here.

St Andrews University Club, Cambridge

The Cambridge Alumni Club have two upcoming events, a drinks evening on Wednesday 2 November 2016 at 7.00pm, at Browns (Trumpington Street, Cambridge CB2 1QA) and their Annual Dinner on Saturday 26 November 2016 at Darwin College, Cambridge. Virginia Woolf and Music

Robinson College Chapel, Cambridge, Thursday 3 November at 7.45pm
The world premiere of two new compositions commissioned by Dr Emma Sutton's 'Virginia Woolf and Music' project will be performed in Cambridge by the renowned Kreutzer Quartet.
