Why Trump triumphed

Professor Stephen Reicher of the School of Psychology & Neuroscience and Professor S Alexander Haslam of the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland predicted the extraordinary appeal of Donald Trump in a book written several months ago and due to be published in the New Year. Chancellor’s Circle

One step closer to TB treatment

According to a new paper published by The Lancet Infectious Diseases, researchers at the University of St Andrews are one step closer to finding a shorter, more effective treatment for TB. Read more

Award-winning musicians perform at St Andrews

St Andrews audiences were recently treated to performances by award-winning Dutch organist Adriaan Hoek (left) and trombonist Ian Bousfield (right) – until recently Principal Trombonist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Read more.

Making a mark with fingerprint technology

Physics PhD student Susanna Challinger is one of just ten young researchers in the UK to have been awarded an Industrial Fellowship by The Royal Commission of the Exhibition of 1851 to help bring novel fingerprint detection technology to life. Read more.

JD Forbes Book Collecting Prize winner scoops national award

Congratulations to undergraduate student Jenny Elwin, winner not only of the University’s James David Forbes Book Collecting Prize 2016 – endowed by Dr William Zachs – but also of the first Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association National Book Collecting Prize. Read more

Laidlaw students give insight to Madras pupils

Around 180 senior school pupils from Madras were recently greeted by Laidlaw student interns at the Students’ Association for an Academic Fayre to hear about academic disciplines and life as a student. Read more.

A fresh take on Scottish Gaelic Songs

Dr Peter Mackay of the School of English presented a piece on BBC Radio 3 on Sunday 13 November, based on his new anthology An Leabhar Liath / The Light-Blue Book. Listen again to the feature, which explores euphemism, innuendo and eroticism in Scottish Gaelic songs and explains how they were censored during the nineteenth century. Read more

General Council of the University of St Andrews

All members are encouraged to attend the next meeting of the General Council on Saturday 26 November at 10.30am in Parliament Hall, South Street, St Andrews. Tea and coffee will be available from 10.00am.

The Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Mapstone, will take the Chair and give the University Address.

Rector of the University Mrs Catherine Stihler MEP will give a presentation entitled Brexit – smooth path or rocky road? The challenges ahead for universities in Scotland.
