St Andrews in the News

July 2015

Welcome to the new-look July edition of St Andrews in the News, our monthly e-newsletter for alumni, parents, donors and friends of the University. This month we’re celebrating the return of The Open to St Andrews and reflecting on a successful Graduation Week!

The 144th Open Championship

After months of anticipation, the waiting is almost over as the world’s best golfers (sadly except Rory McIlroy) will take to the famous fairways of the Old Course for the 144th Open Championship. If you are coming to take in the sights and sounds of the week, then don’t miss out on the University events next week!

The 600 Club

The University is delighted to be launching our new ‘600 Club’ to support the development of student golf at the University. Over £200,000 has been raised to date, with £160,000 for the Arnold Palmer Scholarship, the first recipients of which will be first year Alexa Hammer, from the USA, and second year George Burns, from Scotland. A further £40,000 has been raised for the Saints Golf programme, allowing our talented student golfers to benefit from the best quality coaching and training camps around the world.

If you would like to support golf scholarships at the University of St Andrews, alumni and friends can be a part of The Open Drive by making your gift to the Arnold Palmer endowed scholarship fund. Text FORE15£10 to 70070 to make a difference today if you are in the UK, or visit the website from wherever you are in the world.

The Open, The Links, The University

If you are visiting St Andrews for The Open, why not visit our exhibition of golf photography from the University’s photographic archive?

The exhibition includes images drawn largely from the George M Cowie and the Lawrence Levy Collections and is located within the tented village of The Open throughout the Championship.

Our staff will be on hand to talk you through some of the iconic images of special golfing moments and talk to you about shared St Andrews connections.

Open for All

Join us as we get into the spirit of the Open festivities at a marquee on Lower College Lawn. There will belive streaming of all the action from the Old Course, live music, entertainment, food and a full bar service.

We are delighted to offer a discount to University of St Andrews alumni, giving 10% off all food and beverages purchased in the Open for All marquee and 10% discount on many purchases at the University of St Andrews Retail Shop.

Claim your discount card by visiting us in the Development Office (91 North Street) or come and see us at our photography exhibition in the spectator village on site at the course.

“In my experience, your life is a canvas for your imagination. So far you have only sketched the outline of what might be. But life is not paint by numbers, so you will probably need to go outside your sketched lines from time to time.”

Professor Aaron Quigley, Computer science

Going Green

Deputy First Minister John Swinney spoke of the "fantastic, imaginative potential" of the University of St Andrews £25m green energy centre at Guardbridge on a visit to mark the official start of construction work on the site. A state-of-the-art biomass facility, using only wood from sustainable local sources, will be built on the site of the former paper mill and pump hot water from the plant four miles underground to heat and cool laboratories and student residences in St Andrews.
