My Mother Has Alzheimer's - Am I Going Mad?

Nick Pennington, BSc 1978

Caring for his mother with Alzheimer’s, Nick Pennington was surprised to find so little written about the disease from a family carer’s perspective. His book seeks to provide advice for carers and families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia – and even for those recently diagnosed – to give them some understanding of the rocky road that may lie ahead.

Nick Pennington kept a diary and recorded moments, events and even conversations with his mother, providing a rich source of material for the book. In the book, he traces his mother’s journey to diagnosis and all that entails, as well as describing how the disease manifested itself, in an effort to share basic knowledge about the progress of the disease to help all those affected to be prepared.

Finally, there are tips on financing, power of attorney, available technology and, for when the time is comes, residential homes. Emotional but also humorous in places, the author’s hope is that others can learn from his experience and that it helps them to plan ahead.
