Britannia: Icon on the Coin

Katharine Eustace, MA 1974

This richly illustrated book is the first account of the imagery associated with the icon of British national identity. Britannia entered the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in 2004, but to date there has been no consideration of the visual sources for her identity.

Taking coins as its central theme, Katharine Eustace looks at the evolution of the image in its historical and cultural context, from the Emperor Hadrian to the present day.

The book has a foreword by Sir Roy Strong.
