Abbotsbury: the 'Appreciation' Revisited

Nigel Melville, MA 1959, BD 1962

Over 40 years ago, in 1973, the Ilchester Estate which had owned this tiny Dorset village since the dissolution of its monastery, commissioned an ambitious development plan, part of which was a photo gallery of every building in the village, from its Grade I-listed Tithe Barn, Parish Church, and St Catherine's Chapel right down to temporary garages and farm buildings.

Thirty years later, photographed the same buildings from the same angle, along with all the new developments in the village, and recorded how each one of them had changed in the intervening years.

A National Lottery grant paid all publication costs on condition that every family in the village was given a free copy. Now out of print, an updated version is available in e-book form through Kindle.
