Jewel in the Glen

Ed Hodge, MA 2000

The Ryder Cup is coming home to where it all began; the 40th staging of golf’s showpiece event is returning to Gleneagles, Scotland. Tracing the history of the Ryder Cup back to that famous forerunner match at Gleneagles in 1921, this book intertwines the histories of the coveted prize with the five-star resort’s own rich heritage, on and off the course.

Through a series of over 80 in-depth interviews, an array of national and international celebrities, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Sir Jackie Stewart, Andy Murray and Stephen Hendry, reveal what the Ryder Cup and Gleneagles mean to them while examining the impact the tournament will have on the local community and the wider Scottish society, culture, and economy.

With a foreword from golf’s greatest Jack Nicklaus, designer of the Ryder Cup 2014 course, The PGA Centenary, and a hole-by-hole guide by Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, this volume paints a unique portrait of Gleneagles and Scottish golf as a whole. Produced in association with The Gleneagles Hotel. Ed Hodge grew up in the village of Braco, Perthshire, just 10 minutes from Gleneagles.

The golf fanatic is a former Gleneagles caddy and Golf Office employee and has enjoyed a writing relationship with the five-star resort since 2005. Ed’s Mum, Nicola, also worked at the Jackie Stewart Shooing School at Gleneagles for a number of years. A University of St Andrews M.A. (Hons) modern history graduate with 11 years previous experience as a sports writer in Scotland, Ed is now PR & Media Executive for the Scottish Golf Union.

The 35-year-old lives in Linlithgow with his wife, Iona, and two young children, Andrew and Kirsty. He is spotted, when time allows, trying to maintain a single-figure handicap at Kingsfield Golf Centre. This is his first book. Follow Ed’s book updates on Twitter @edhodgegolf
